Bone grafts in dentistry

Bone grafting is described as a procedure done to build up the bone of the jaw in preparation for placing dental implants. Dental implants are long-term restorations that are used to replace missing teeth. However, their placement requires a patient to have enough bone to hold the implant in place and allow the natural process of osseointegration (bone growth) to occur. Without this, patients either need to build the bone through bone grafting or consider an alternative tooth replacement option altogether.

It can be done with the patient’s own bone in the form of chin block grafting, ramus grafting, or even hip grafting or we can use bone from bone banks. This donated bone or cadaveric bone is sterilized and has no living cells but can act as a scaffold to promote new bone formation. Sometimes xenografts can be used which are from different species and again are devoid of living cells. When you meet to discuss bone grafting at Quintessence Family Dentistry, Dr. Gaurav Ghosh will discuss the appropriate bone graft for your individual situation.

Who Is A Candidate For this?

Any patient who has insufficient bone due to periodontal disease or tooth loss can book an appointment with Dr.Gaurav Ghosh about undergoing procedures such as bone grafting to bring their smile back to health or prepare it for the placement of certain restorations, including dental implants.
